Matrei in Osttirol

In the heart of the National Park Hohe Tauern in Ost-Tirol the village of Matrei is situated. The village is surrounded by the high mountain tops of the Grossglockner and the Grossvenediger – offering a stunning view from the village.

The village of Matrei has its own ski area that is connected to the ski area of Kals. These two areas cover over 44 km of slopes and are suitable for both beginners as advanced skiers. The cable-car (Goldried I) is situated just outside the village and leads you into the ski area. It is possible to ski all the way back to the village – from the mountain station there is a blue run that leads down to the middle station and from here you can reach the village through a red slope. It is also an option to use the cable-car to get back to the village. The ski are of Matrei has a children’s playground in the snow and snowboarders can enjoy themselves in the fun park.

Matrei is a peaceful village with a cosy atmosphere. The medieval church is still the highest building in the village – there are no high-rising buildings to be found here. There are a number of supermarkets, several shops, various restaurants and bars and a few discotheques. Furthermore, there is a nursery, ski schools and an ice-rink. The less-enthusiastic winter sport visitor can enjoy the 30 km long cross-country trail or enjoy the beautiful hiking tours.
