Saalfelden is a medium-sized town at a convenient location, not far from several large ski areas. By car or with the ski bus you can easily access Leogang (about 20 minutes), which is directly connected to the Skicircus Saalbach/Hinterglemm/Leogang with 270 km of slopes. From winter 2019/2020 there is one ski pass for the ski areas of Zell am See/Kaprun and Saalback/Hinterglemm/Leogang/Fieberbrunn, for a total of 408 km of slopes.
At 6 km distance you can find the village of Maria Alm and together with the villages of Mühlbach and Dienten it forms the ski area Hochkönig. This extensive ski area offers a total of 150 km of slopes. To get to the village Maria Alm, it is possible to take the free skibus or drive yourselves. There are several ski lifts in this village leading directly into the ski area.
Saalfelden is initially a cross-country destination, due to its perfect location in a wide valley. Around the village there are 35 km of easy-accessible cross-country trails available. For the advanced cross-country skiers there is the challenging 15 kilometre-long World Cup trail ‘Ritzensee’. Other winter sports activities in the area are e.g. hiking, snow rafting, sledding and ice-skating.
Saalfelden offers plenty of facilities; alongside its various restaurants, bars and night-life there are also supermarkets, shops, banks and several sports and wellness facilities. Moreover, there are a number of ski schools and there is child-care available.
